Fondateur de Bitcoin Fog condamné à purger une peine de prison de 150 mois

The operator of a cryptocurrency mixing service has been sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison.

Bitcoin Fog Founder Sentenced to 150 Months in Prison

Bitcoin Fog, a cryptocurrency mixing service, saw its founder sentenced to 150 months in prison for running one of the “largest and longest-running money laundering services” according to prosecutors. The service allegedly laundered over $400 million in criminal proceeds since its creation in 2011. This case raised questions about cryptocurrencies operating outside legal frameworks, especially as blockchain analysis and crypto payment tracing techniques evolve.

What are Cryptocurrency Mixers?

Mixers, also known as tumblers, are services used to mix cryptocurrency transactions, making it harder for forensic accountants to trace the money’s origins. Essentially, users deposit their tokens into a pool, which then shuffles the cryptocurrency before redistributing it back to users minus a service fee. This process aims to enhance individuals’ privacy and prevent tracking of the money’s trail.

Sentencing and Confiscation

The founder of Bitcoin Fog, Sterlingov, was ordered to forfeit his Bitcoin holdings valued at more than $103 million. Despite claiming that his crypto holdings came from early investment, Sterlingov admitted to using the service as a user. Prosecutors linked him to the service by tracing financial transactions from 2011, including payments for registering the Bitcoinfog.com domain.

The evidence presented, such as IP addresses and blockchain data, connected Sterlingov to the service, leading to his sentencing. While maintaining his innocence throughout the trial, Sterlingov expressed remorse after the verdict. The case highlights the increasing scrutiny on cryptocurrency mixers and their potential legal implications in the evolving landscape of financial regulations.
